Bainbridge sailcloth for the iconic ‘Clarionet’

Clarionet, the famous Sparkman & Stephens One Tonner from 1966, built by Clare Lallow’s yard in Cowes has undergone a process of restoration to bring her back to her original configuration. In recent decades she was successfully optimised for IRC, but she has now been returned to her original specification with the aim to race the classics.

All aspects of this beautiful yacht have been looked at and re-worked, including restoring her original deck configuration and wooden rig. The attention to detail can be seen all through the refit work. She absolutely shines!

Bainbridge has a history with Clarionet with the supply of DIAX2 race laminate sails for her IRC racing days, but to bring her back to her 1966 form, the DIAX2 has gone. In collaboration with Banks Sails a set of narrow panelled mainsail and mitre cut headsails have been made using Bainbridge SPX Classic Cream balanced polyester woven sailcloth.

Along with the new sails Clarionet is also sporting a beautiful new rig and a unique ‘Plank’ boom. Both have been fashioned in solid wood from the Sparkman and Stephens original plans.

Bainbridge is delighted to have worked alongside the team who have lovingly resorted this classic to her original glory. Clarionet’s first engagement is British Classic Week in the Solent, we are all excited to see how she does, and we are sure that she has many more adventures to come and wish her owners and crew every success.

Gavin Lacey, Commercial Director, Bainbridge International said ‘We are so pleased to have been involved further with Clarionet’s on-going journey and help to bring her back to her classic roots. We would typically look at bringing a boat into the 21st century with the latest materials and the most hi-tech look. This project has required a gentler approach and our SPX Classic Cream sailcloth is perfect for the job. It is a high-quality balanced polyester and yet looks the part on a classic yacht. It could be said, the best of both worlds!’
